Magraw, Dr. Richard M. of Spring Park, MN, passed away on November 30, 2017, at the age of 98. Dr. Magraw was born October 2, 1919 to Martha Mueller Magraw and Charles Elliott Magraw in the Twin Cities. An accomplished physician and educator, Dr. Magraw's life's work spanned private practice in Two Harbors, MN; U.S. Army Captain, serving as neurological consultant for all UN Forces in Korea and chief psychiatrist at Tokyo Army Hospital; professorships at the University of Minnesota, including as Director of the Comprehensive Clinic Program in the Medical School; service as the Assistant Director of the Bureau of Medical Services and as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health Manpower at HEW; Dean of the University of Illinois Medical School; President of the Eastern Virginia Medical School; chair of the AMA's Committee of Undergraduate Education; consultant for the Indian Health Service; and Chief of Psychiatry at the Minneapolis VA Hospital, establishing an endowed chair in Brain Science, with donations from the American Legion and the University's Alumni Association. Upon retirement, he returned to teaching at the University of Minnesota. During this time, he was an active supporter of the Center for Victims of Torture. He wrote Ferment in Medicine: A Study of the Essence of Medical Practice and of Its New Dilemmas, published in 1966, for which he was awarded the Norman Welch Award for the most distinguished writing in medical care and economics. He was a member of the Pine Bend Scout Club since the 1930s. Dr. Magraw was predeceased by his wife of 69 years, Shirley Shannon Magraw, and his three brothers, Jack, Dan and Chuck. He is survived by Dr. Bronwen Magraw (Kurt Campbell), Dr. Susan Magraw (John Steinin-ger), Richard Magraw (Kathy), and Thomas Magraw (Kristin Andes), as well as six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews. A memorial for Dr Richard Magraw is planned for Saturday, January 6, 2018, at 1:00 pm at the Minneapolis Friends Meeting, 4401 York Ave. S, Minneapolis, MN 55410. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Minneapolis Friends Meeting.
