Werner continued playing when he retired to Florida, playing with the Tampa Bay Symphony Orchestra, a traveling Spanish Theatre group, was a member of the Clam Bayou Jazz Band and played Sunday brunches as one of a trio at the Don CeSar in St. Pete Beach. Werner was a prodigy in music and began playing in big bands when he was 14 years old, at 18 he enlisted in the army where he served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater as an Aerial Gunner, earning 8 Bronze Stars, an Air Medal w/a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster and the World War II Victory Medal, after being discharged he enrolled and graduated from the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago. After living in Brooklyn, NY and working as a musician for a short time he returned to Chicago to become a band member at the famous Chez Paree where he met his bride Ruth who was a stage dancer. Werner played with many famous acts (too many to name). Werner retired from Hennepin County Medical Center where he worked for 15 years as Manager of Admissions, and then built a new home in Tarpon Springs, Florida where he and Ruth lived until after her death in 2006. Their home was a welcome place for his sons and families to visit often, where many wonderful memories were made. Besides his passion of music he loved spending time with his family, his dogs & cats, to garden (growing amazing roses), loved to fish and golf and travel the United States. The family would like to thank the staff of Lake Minnetonka Shores & Optage Hospice for their unfailing care of Werner and to his special friends Bobbie (his home care nursing aide) and Martin and Michael from his time at his Spring Park apartment. Memorials are preferred to MN Music Coalition: mnmusiccoalition.org/about/ A memorial service is being planned for spring 2018.
