Mahon, Mark P. Former Minnesota state representative and Bloomington city councilman died peacefully on September 7, 2017 at age 87. Born April 24, 1930, Mark grew up in Winsted, MN and resided in Bloomington since 1959. Mark joined the U.S. Air Force in 1953 and served as an air traffic controller in Saudi Arabia during the Korean War. Following an honorable discharge Mark began his 36-year career with International Harvester and became President of United Auto Workers Local #763. Mark won election to the Bloomington city council four times beginning in 1979. Mark's dedication to public service also included serving on the Bloomington Port Authority and the Metropolitan Waste Control Commission. Mark was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives representing east Bloomington and southeast Richfield three times beginning in 1992. Mark worked tirelessly for the citizens of his district. He was a passionate defender of workers' rights and greater social equality. In 1976, Mark was selected to be a Minnesota delegate to the Democratic National Convention in New York City. Though a devoted Democrat, Mark had many close friends across the political spectrum and from all walks of life. Mark's passion included his family. He married Florence Mochinski of Winsted in 1956 and they had four sons. Mark was a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren: Andrew, Michaela, Emily, Catherine, Bryan, Joseph, Madeline and Eleanor. He is survived by his sons Kevin (Mary), Stephen (Claudia), Paul, Mark, his companion of 16 years, Karen Pedersen, as well as his brother Maurice and sister Mary. Mark was proceeded in death by his mother Catherine, his father Paul, sisters Rose and Margaret, and his wife Florence. Mass of Christian Burial 11:00am on Wednesday, September 13th at the Church of St. Bonaventure, 901 E. 90th St., Bloomington with visitation one hour prior and a lunch to follow. A celebration wake will take place Tuesday, September 12th from 5-7pm at Gill Brothers Funeral Home, 9947 Lyndale Ave. S., Bloomington. He will be buried in Winsted, MN.
