Mangan, Jack age 67 passed away peacefully at home in Minneapolis on September 1, 2017 after a 4-month battle with cancer. He is preceded in death by parents Tom and Myra Mangan. He is survived by his wife Jean; brothers Jimmy of Mankato, Patrick of Duluth; sisters Connie of Portland ND, Margaret of Minneapolis and Laurie Schreyer of St. Peters, Mo. He is also survived by close family friend Tremayne Talbot. Jack and Jean were married for 30 wonderful years. During the first half of their marriage, they enjoyed canoeing in the Canadian wilderness and backpacking in the Southwest. During the second half of their marriage they enjoyed bicycling, travelling to Europe and sitting on the hill of their weekend home outside Dassel and looking at Lake Jennie. Jack treasured his friendship with his neighbors in the Old Highland neighborhood of north Minneapolis, and the folks at Lake Jennie Covenant Church near Dassel, MN and the Minneapolis chess community. Jack worked in the Minneapolis public schools as a behavior specialist-from 1990 to 2005. His wife described this job as having 2 masters degrees to say, "we don't do that here," and "make your mother proud." He very much enjoyed his time teaching and coaching chess at the Juvenile Detention Center the past 8 years, as well as previously coaching chess at Seward, Field, and Nellie Stone Johnson schools. A memorial service will be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1800 Glenwood Ave. North, Minneapolis Minnesota on Saturday September 9th at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, his family requests memorials to Minneapolis Chess, 1121 Jackson St NE, Ste 134 Minneapolis 55413 to help fund chess tournament fees for inner city youth and the chess program at the Minneapolis Juvenile Detention Center.
