Tearse, Phyllis Bartholomae a long-time resident of Minneapolis, died on Thursday, August 17th following a brief illness. Born in 1925 in Winona, Minnesota, Phylllis received an undergraduate degree from Carlton College in 1947. She continued her education at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois from which she received her Masters of Music degree in 1950. In 1952 Phyllis married James Wright Tearse also of Winona. They went on to have three daughters: Deborah, Patricia and Suzanne, and 6 grandchildren, Sam, Sarah, Molly, Jim, David, Charlie. An accomplished classical pianist, Phyllis first taught music at Texas Wesleyan College and then went on to perform piano recitals in the Minneapolis area. She was a hostess and performer for the Friday Music Club of Minneapolis and longtime loyal patron of the Minnesota Orchestra. Phyllis was an avid golfer and tennis player, regularly competing with many of the male players during her high school years in Winona. She was an active member and noteworthy competitor at the Minneapolis Golf Club. Phyllis loved to laugh. She especially loved to spend time with her family and support their activities with her presence and resources. Music remained a very special part of her life to the very end. She was always learning and always eager to try new things, from travel throughout Europe, to enjoying motorcycling and sports cars, or performing music with her grandchildren. Her love of the arts stretched from music, to personal fashion, to interior design and art in her historic home overlooking Minnehaha Parkway. Phyllis left an indelible mark on all who encountered her and because of her charm, wit, warmth, class, and contagious laughter it is safe to say she never met a stranger... ...at least not for long. She was preceded in death by husband "Jimmy", brother Warren Bartholomae, and is survived by her three daughters and their husbands Tom, Robert, Mark, and her 6 grandchildren. A memorial service will be 1 p.m., Monday, August 21, 2017 at the First Congregational Church, 161 West Broadway, Winona. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona. The family requests that donations made in memory of Phyllis be sent to: Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute, 800 E. 28th St., Minneapolis, MN 55407 or phone: 612-863-4200 Services entrusted to Fawcett Junker Funeral Home, Winona, MN.
