Burt, Katherine Seger age 93, formerly of Minneapolis and Edina, passed away on August 1, 2017 in St. Cloud, MN. Kay, as she was known to family and friends, was preceded into eternal rest by her beloved parents, Raymond and Faye Seger, brother Dennis, and husband Alfred (Al) to whom she was married for more than 63 years. Kay graduated from Mpls. Central High School in 1941 and attended the University of Minnesota. In 1943 she enlisted in the Women's Army Corps and was assigned to the Eighth Air Force Headquarters in High Wycombe, England near London, where she worked in the underground communications center "without seeing sunlight or smelling fresh air" for long hours each day until VE Day. She was then stationed in Germany until after VJ Day. After returning home Kay met Al on a double blind date - although, on that night, they were not each other's dates. But a week later Al called Kay and asked her to be his date; they were married on September 24, 1949. They lived in Mpls., and Edina, where Kay was a full-time homemaker, devoting herself to raising her four children. After her children grew into their teens, Kay became an investigator for the fledgling Mpls. Civil Rights Dept., and subsequently became a supervisor for the dept. Later she worked for the U.S. Dept. of Education. After retiring from their respective jobs, Kay and Al took up residence in San Diego, and later moved to Las Vegas. But every summer they returned to Minnesota to their cabin near Onamia, which has been in the Burt family since 1949. Kay continued to spend her summers at the cabin even after Al's passing; she greatly enjoyed the company of her neighbors, the weekly luncheons with her women friends, and their Big Hat parties. Kay struggled with macular degeneration for her last 20 years, but despite her nearly total blindness, she taught herself how to type e-mails on her (talking) computer, and her blindness did not stop her from getting out and doing things like serving on a jury (taking the bus to get to the courthouse every day) and being elected jury fore-woman. She was accepted into the Southern Nevada Honor Flight Program For War Veterans, and in 2014 she was honored to receive and accept an invitation to travel to Washington D.C. with the group to visit the war memorials and other national monuments. Kay is survived by her children Patrick, Kristin McMillan, Michael (Lisa), and Matthew, 4 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. Always a devoted mother, the happiness and welfare of her children remained the most important concerns in Kay's life, and the smallest details of their lives occupied her thoughts more than they will ever know. Kay's children would like to express their deep gratitude to the staff of the St. Cloud Hospital for the very kind and compassionate care our mom received during her final days. Kay's ashes will be interred at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. A short service will be held at the cemetery on Tuesday, August 29; we will meet at 11:10 AM at Assembly Area 2.
