Orenstein, N. Stuart "Stu" age 92, passed away on July 2, 2017 in Chicago, IL, where he had lived since 1977. Born on March 21, 1925 in Minneapolis, MN to Anne and Fred Orenstein, he was preceded in death by his brother Edward and his twin sister Barbara Schampan. He is survived by his five children, Connie Orenstein, Jane D. Stein, Miriam 'Mary Ellen' Guttman (Shaya 'Irving'), Robert B. Orenstein and Gershon 'George' Orenstein (Nina), 24 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren; Shirleymae Epstein Lane, the mother of his children, and Davida 'Dee' Marshak his dear friend of 35 years. Stu was an Ensign in the U.S. Navy in WWII, enlisting before his 18th birthday and trained in the Navy's V12 program at the Wharton School. His assignment was in communications on staff of a rear admiral in the Pacific, and after VJ Day his travels included Manila, Shanghai, and even Hiroshima. He was very proud of his service in the Navy and appreciative of the experience that this service provided him. After his discharge he graduated from the U of M, he married, and went to work in his father's business, Frederick James Fur Co. He then worked in the car business for many years. In Chicago he worked as a commodities broker into his 80's. He was a long-time member of Adath Jeshurun Synagogue, where growing up he was especially close to his uncle, Rabbi Albert I. Gordon. Stu followed current events closely and was an unwavering supporter of Israel. He enjoyed politics, anything relating to the history of WWII, and was a fan of the Chicago Bears, Bulls and Cubs. He enjoyed stand-up comedy, action movies, a good joke, and receiving updates on his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. There was never a plate of food too large or too spicy; a bottle of Tabasco was always at hand just in case. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of Jesse Brown VA Hospital in Chicago for their extraordinary care of this WWII Veteran, the staff of Mosaic of Lakeshore where he spent his final months, and his team at Vitas Hospice for their compassionate care at the end of his life. Memorials to donor's favorite charity. Interment was July 3 at Minneapolis Jewish Cemetery.
