Leavenworth, Ann Athens Age 91, Spring Park, MN passed away Tuesday, April 25, 2017. Ann was born May 21, 1925 in Duluth, MN where she graduated from Central High School in 1943. She attended Stephens College in Missouri and the University of Minnesota, where she graduated in 1947 with a degree in X-ray Technology. Ann was a loyal member of Alpha Delta Pi and had lifelong friendships with her sorority sisters. She was an x-ray technician at Colombia Hospital in New York City and then at Ancker Hospital in St. Paul, MN where she met her future husband. Dick and Ann married on June 16, 1951 and spent their lives together on Lake Minnetonka until Dick's death in 2004. They loved the lake life and enjoyed skating, skiing, sailing, golfing and tennis. They enjoyed entertaining and their lake home was the site of many social gatherings. Dick and Ann were founding members of the Upper Lake Minnetonka Yacht Club, and in its early years, all sailboat races started and ended at their dock. Ann also enjoyed cooking and gardening. She was always enthusiastic to try a new recipe and often stressed the importance of adding more butter. Ann and Dick traveled extensively and had fun vacation homes in Snowmass, CO, St. John, USVI and Rio Verde, AZ where many special memories were made. Preceded in death by her parents, Dr. A.G. (Alvin) and Rachel Athens; her husband, Dr. Richard O. Leavenworth; and her oldest daughter, Dr. Nancy Leavenworth Schader. Survived by her two brothers, Jack (Georgia) Athens of Salt Lake City, UT and Tom (Jean) Athens of Fergus Falls, MN. Also survived by two daughters, Suzie (Larry) Freeman of Deephaven, MN, Georgia (Tom) Burton of Deephaven, MN, and her son-in-law Bob (Chris) Schader of Longmont, CO. She adored and was much loved by her five grandchildren: Rick Schader, Kate and Will Freeman, Harrison and Charlie Burton; two step-grandchildren, Stephanie Schader and Heather Cowan, and many nieces and nephews near and far. There will be a celebration of life Saturday, May 13, 1:00 p.m. at Presbyterian Homes, 4527 Shoreline Drive, Spring Park, MN. Memorials preferred to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, Attn: Terri at 3675 Arboretum Drive, Chaska, MN 55318.
