Schmit, Stanley James Age 75, of Mpls. died on March 19, 2017. Born July 23, 1941 in Malad City, ID, he was preceded in death by parents, Alfred and Mabel Schmit and a brother, Brian G. Schmit. He is survived by a brother, Lt Colonel (retired) Steven J. Schmit and his wife Kathy (Richmond, VA); a sister, Susan J. Tewalt and her husband Timothy (Crossville, TN). Surviving relatives in the local area include an aunt, Darlene Hapka (White Bear Lake); an uncle, David Schmit and wife Mary (Edina); and cousins John Schmit, Stephen Schmit, Nancy Murch, and Richard Miller. As a youth, Stanley won the Boy Scouts' God and Country award and achieved Eagle Scout rank. A graduate of Harding High School, Stanley briefly attended the Univ. of MN and later worked at the Hamms Brewery in quality control. Stanley was a free spirit who traveled to CA and successfully worked various jobs before returning to MN. Despite a debilitating stroke in 2001 when he became a resident at Walker-Methodist Health Center, Stanley enjoyed life; he particularly enjoyed singing. Prior to 2001, he had been the night watchman at the Marie Sandvik Center in Mpls. for over 25 years. Known for his extensive vocabulary and eloquent use of language, his generous personality will be sorely missed by friends and family who loved him. Interment Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
