He met Jane Larson in 1951 and they were married in August following their graduation from Carleton College in 1953. After a year in Hartford, Connecticut they moved to Northfield where Dick worked with his parents in their Ben Franklin store. A teaching position opened in the Math Department at Northfield Senior High School. He, Jane and Hugh moved back to Northfield where Mark was born in 1967. Dick taught in the high school for 30 years, and coached track for 25 years. In that time the team won the AA State Championship in 1983. He never lost his love for students, colleagues, and teaching math. His interest in them continued along with keeping abreast of changes in retail and in the health of the Community at large.
