Hanson, Lowell Dennis 89, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family December 3, 2016. He was born November 9, 1927 to Ethel and Mauritz Hanson and raised on a farm near Winthrop, Minnesota. After serving as a Marine Corps officer during the Korean War, Lowell used GI Bill benefits to earn a doctorate in soil science from the University of Minnesota. He then joined the University as a professor and extension agent, starting a 30-year career. Professionally, Lowell was ahead of his time. He pioneered techniques for precision farming, highlighting environmental concerns and working to reduce herbicide dependence. In 1952, Lowell married Bernice Lundgren and together they raised five children. Following the end of their marriage in 1985, he held a long relationship with the late Isabel Rife. Later in life Lowell and Bernice reconciled in friendship. Throughout his life, he pursued his passions for gardening, history, and church projects. We will remember his remarkable determination staying true to camping itineraries despite gale-force winds, perfecting inventions and baking incredible blueberry pies. We will also remember his compassion and heart, his gestures of love and support. Lowell is survived by his 5 children: Karrie Hanson (Ben Greene), Karol (Denis) Erickson, Jacqueline (Fred) Hyde, Jen (Brad) Weinlaeder, and Eric (Yvonne) Hanson, 11 grandchildren: Erica, Britta, Sophie, James, Melissa, Katie, Ryan, Andrew, Christopher, Ross and Will, 7 great-grandchildren, Bernice Hanson, and his brother Richard Hanson. Lowell was preceded in death by his brother Rodney Hanson. A memorial service will be held Friday 12/9/16 at 2:30 at White Bear Unitarian Universalist Church in Mahtomedi. In lieu of flowers, donations to Minnesota Historical Society or donor's choice are gratefully accepted. Cremation Society of MN cremationsocietyofmn.com
