Walton, Duane of Plymouth, died peacefully November 30, 2016 at the age of 84. Duane was born July 18, 1932 at Webster, SD to Floyd and Verna Walton of Waubay, SD. He was baptized and confirmed at Egeland Lutheran Church. He attended rural grade school and graduated from Waubay High School in 1950. He farmed with his father until he was drafted into the Army in 1953 where he served two years in the Military Police Corps. He returned to the farm after discharge and was engaged in partnership farming with his father. On December 28, 1956 he was married to Betty Huggett of Roslyn, SD. In the fall of 1959 he left the farm and entered South Dakota State College at Brookings, majoring in Agricultural Education. He was employed by the South Dakota Extension Service and stationed in Watertown, SD. In 1965 Duane and Betty moved to Thief River Falls, MN where he was employed by Cenex as a Fertilizer Blending Plant Manager and Operations Supervisor of Cenex Fertilizer Blending Plants in North Dakota and northern MN. In 1969 Duane and Betty purchased a Ladies Fashion and Shoe retail store in Thief River Falls. The name was changed to Mr. Duane's and expanded into a Junior Miss and Ladies Apparel and Shoe Store and two ladies shoe stores in the Columbia Mall at Grand Forks, ND. Duane was very active in the business community affairs in Thief River Falls and Columbia Mall. He served ten years on the Thief River Falls Planning Commision. Duane held a private pilot license and enjoyed flying airplanes, along with riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, traveling, hunting and target shooting. In 1984 Duane and Betty moved to Minnetonka, MN where Duane was employed by the bond firm of Moore, Juran & Company as Vice President of Institutional Securities sales to South Dakota Banks. For three years he was Vice President of Institutional Sales at Dougherty Financial of Minneapolis. He retired in 1979 and moved to Florida for eight years. He was a life member of the American Legion and served as President and Board of Director member of condo associations in Hawaii, Florida and Minnesota. He was a member of the Zuhrah Shrine Temple in Minneapolis and played bugle with the Temple Drum and Bugle Corps. Duane was a Rotary Club Paul Harris Fellow and serviced in the capacity of all offices in the Thief River Falls Rotary Club. He was a Past Commander of the Waubay American Legion Post 129. Duane is survived by his wife, Betty; son, Brent and wife Julie. Memorial service 2:00 PM Friday, December 9, 2016 at David Lee Funeral Home, 1220 East Wayzata Boulevard, Wayzata.
