Ostwald, Melvin George (Mel) 83, of Houston, TX and Minneapolis, MN, died peacefully on June 18, 2016 in his home in Minneapolis after a long battle with cancer. Mel was born on September 28, 1932 in Madison, MN and adopted on June 10, 1942 by George & Bertha Ostwald. He graduated from Lakefield High School and received a BA degree from the University of Minnesota. He was married to Sharon (Mills) Ostwald for 50 years. He is survived by one son, Jamel (Elizabeth) Ostwald of Willimantic, CT, one brother, Dale (Mae) Jensen, many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by daughter, Tanya Kay, and by his parents, 6 sisters and 3 brothers. In 2015 Mel published a memoir of his life, "Railroad Tracks, Winding Paths, Home at Last" (Bookemon Press). He will be greatly missed by his family and by friends from around the world. Mel's funeral will be held at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, 3045 Chicago Ave S, Minneapolis, MN, 55407 on Wednesday, June 29 at 11:00 AM with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. A Memorial Service will be held at Christ the King Lutheran Church, Houston, TX at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be sent to the Tanya Kay Ostwald Memorial Scholarship for Nursing Students at The University of Texas School of Nursing at Houston (6901 Bertner Ave, Houston, TX 77030) or an organization of the donor's choice.
