Smieja, Raymond John age 89, of Richfield, went to his eternal home on May 27, 2016. He was a long time employee of the Star Tribune and retired in March of 1991. Preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Alice; granddaughter Angie, brothers Ernest, Herbert, Gerald. Our "Ray of Sunshine" is survived by his children: James (Juliene), Kathryn (Oliver), Daniel, Patricia; grandchildren: Lisa, Melanie, Jennifer, Jody, Elizabeth, Eric, Glenn, Jameson; great grandchildren: Devan, Stella, Alexander, Alexis, Eryka, Isabella, Presley, Pryce, Isabel, Andrew, and Sydney; brother, Donald (Dell); many nieces and nephews; and the residents and staff at the Pines Assisted Living Community in Richfield, which was his second family. Mass of Christian Burial 10:30 AM Tuesday, June 7 at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 6730 Nicollet Avenue, Richfield. Interment Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Visitation Monday, June 6, 5-7 PM at Morris Nilsen Chapel, 6527 Portland Ave and one hour before Mass at Church. Memorials preferred to St. Peter's Catholic Church Endowment Fund. Ray's family would also like to extend its grateful appreciation to the wonderful staff at the N.C. Little Hospice of Edina for the extraordinary attention and tender care they provided.
