Rolfs, Bemiss A. Age 80, of Edina, Minnesota and New Orleans, Louisiana, passed away quietly at home surrounded by family, February 2, 2016, after a hard fought battle with lymphoma. Preceded in death by his parents, Henry Alvin and Lillian Cecilia (née Pitard) Rolfs; and one brother, Kenneth Allen Rolfs. Survived by loving wife of 60 years, Betty Garland; sons Richmond Bemiss (Dr. Mary Zygmunt) and Bradley Garland; grandchildren, Kimberly Claire and Adam Bradley. Bemiss was born, raised, married, and began his professional career and family in New Orleans, and continued to maintain a close connection to the city until his death. A star basketball player at Alcée Fortier High School he later attended Tulane University. Bemiss' first job was as a car washer and runner for Hertz Rent-A-Car, eventually retiring after working his way up to being President & CEO of National Car Rental. He was a longtime Board of Directors member in such organizations as the Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce, the Better Business Bureau, United Way, Minnesota Zoo, and the Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute. Dedicated to his dual hometowns, Bemiss was an active participant in New Orleans Mardi Gras (including being a member of the carnival organization Knights of Babylon) as well as a contributor to the Minneapolis Aquatennial and other related local traditions and customs. Bemiss was an avid racquetball player and golfer. He remained devoted to his profession and family throughout his life. Christian Mass funeral service Wednesday, February 17, 11 AM at St. Patrick's Church, Valley View & Gleason Road, Edina. Visitation one hour prior to service. Internment to be in Metairie Cemetery, New Orleans, Louisiana, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Fairview Foundation - Fairview Hospice Program.
