MacMillan, Marion Hamilton Marion Hamilton MacMillan of Bermuda died after peaceful surrender to complications of neurodegenerative disease on August 30, 2009 in Lyford Cay, Bahamas. Born on October 17, 1932 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, she was the daughter of John H. MacMillan, Jr. and Marion Dickson MacMillan. She was the great-granddaughter of W.W. Cargill, the founder of Cargill, Incorporated. Her father was Chairman and CEO of Cargill for many years. Marion attended Westover School in Middlebury, Connecticut and graduated from Vassar College in 1954. She did post-graduate work in languages at the University of Geneva, Switzerland. She lived for many years in Switzerland where she met Hubert F. Sontheim. They were married in 1958 and had two children. They were divorced in 1967. In later years she made her home in Bermuda but traveled extensively throughout the world. Marion had a lifelong interest in achieving and maintaining spiritual and physical health. She was a keen sportswoman and enjoyed skiing, golf and tennis. Marion was also interested in equestrian activities, especially dressage. She also studied to enhance her enjoyment of singing and loved to do sketches and drawings. These more artistic pursuits supplemented her keen interest in developing her spirituality and providing the means for others to do the same. To this end, Marion established a learning center for wholistic and personal development. Marion touched the hearts of all those who knew her. She was deeply devoted to her family and friends. Marion had the gift of inspiring loyalty and service in the many that she met through her personal and business interests in several countries. In turn, she was very generous with her contributions to individuals, groups and institutions. Marion was preceded in death by her son Frank, her parents and her brothers W. Duncan and John H. MacMillan III. She is survived by her daughter, Gwendolyn (James); two grand- children; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Private memorial services will be held in the Bahamas and Minneapolis at a later date. Interment will be held privately at St. Anne's Church in Bermuda.
