Berg, Dr. Robert (Bob) William Age 98 of Minneapolis (formerly of Shoreview) who passed away on December 22, 2015. A private family graveside service was held at Fort Snelling National Cemetery with military honors on December 28, 2015. Bob was born in Red Wing, Minnesota and grew up in the Welch/Red Wing area. He graduated from Red Wing High School and attended the University of Minnesota where he met his future wife, Hazel Carlson. He served in the Pacific with the Army from 1941 until 1945, and after being wounded, served with the Army at Fitzsimons Hospital in Denver in charge of the Plastic Eye Unit. At the U of M, Bob earned his BS, MS and PhD degrees. After graduating, he went to work in the poultry industry as a hatchery manager. In 1958, he became a Poultry Extension Specialist at the University of Minnesota Extension Service. He earned numerous industry awards and accolades before retiring in 1984. He and Hazel enjoyed many years of travel, volunteering at the Swedish Institute in Minneapolis and the Minnesota State Fair, and being active with their church community. He also enjoyed working in his garden, at the tree farm and in his woodshop. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Hazel and brothers, Carl, Stuart, and Curtis; sisters, Marion Berg, Dorothy Cole and LiVera Mandelkow. He is survived by 3 sons: Stephen (Linda) Berg of Ankeny, Iowa, Paul Berg of Utrecht, the Netherlands, James (Sue) Berg of Grantham, New Hampshire; 5 grandchildren: Thor (Merrilyn) Berg of Austin, Minnesota; Carl (Heidi) Berg of Mason City, Iowa; Kara (Michael) Goetz of Seattle, Washington; Anna Berg of Montpelier, Vermont and Rachel Berg of Grantham, New Hampshire and 3 great grandsons: Casey Berg, Collin Berg and Gunnar Goetz. Memorials are preferred to the Johnson-Kitts Scholarship Fund of Centennial United Methodist Church (1524 West County Road C2, Roseville, MN 55113) or to a Veterans charity of donor's choice.
