Hughes, Dejunius passed away in his home on Nov. 16, 2007. Survived by his wife, Karen Starr; daughter, Theresa Hughes Beaumont (Mary Mueller) of San Francisco, CA; stepson, Patrick M. Starr (K.J. Hagedorn) of Mpls; and stepdaughter, Jenny R. Starr (Eric Schnell) of San Francisco. Grandpa JuJu leaves grandchildren, Maya Brazil Burnaugh, Eli and Rio Starr of Mpls, and Peter and Sonia Schnell of San Francisco; his surviving sister, Pearl Johnson resides in Gary, IN and brother, William Hughes in Chicago. IL; many nephews, nieces and cousins throughout the country lovingly remember him. Born in Albion, MI, Dejunius traveled widely, lived for a time in Paris and Amsterdam as well as Chicago, IL and New York City. He settled in Minneapolis and soon became an integral part of the arts community. He was a photographer and filmmaker, produced several films in Minnesota and founded the Twin Cities International Black Film Festival which drew national attention during its five year run. Dejunius was witty and big hearted, a loyal friend, insatiably interested in issues affecting the black community, he encouraged us to learn from the work of venerable artists such as James Baldwin and Oscar Micheaux. He was always open to learning from and supporting the innovation of young artists. I love my friend. He went away from me. There's nothing more to say.
