Dorothy (Townsend) Casserly
Casserly, Dorothy Townsend Age 89, died September 25, 2015 at her home in Minneapolis of complications from a stroke. She was born April 7, 1926 in Belle Plaine, Minnesota, to D. Charles and Pearl (Forslof) Townsend. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism from the University of Minnesota in 1948. After graduation, she worked at the Faribault Daily News and as the assistant director of Public Relations at the Radisson Hotel. She was also a reporter and columnist for the Belle Plaine Herald, and a reporter and Managing Editor of the Sun Current newspapers in multiple Twin Cities suburbs. After retirement, she wrote for Twin Cities' neighborhood newspapers. Ms. Casserly won numerous awards for her writing and reporting, including from the Minnesota Newspaper Association, Minnesota Women's Press, and the Minnesota Education Association. Married Bernard A. Casserly on June 23, 1951. Preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Casserly, in 2008, son Bernard Casserly Jr. in 1954, and sisters Kathryn Jean Berg in 2006 and Mary Townsend in 1990. Survived by her children, Katie Casserly (Mick Ganley), Martha Casserly (Paul Wendlandt), Lisa Taplin (Brad), Charles Casserly, Molly Goodson (Mike) and John Casserly (Julie), twelve grandchildren, Colin (Andrea Woolverton), Bernard "Brian," Meghan (Fred McCormick), Molly, Paul IV "Cass," Claire, Liam, Janie, Erin, Johnny, James and Ruby and one great-grandchild (Lucille Ganley). She is also survived by her brother, C. Edward Townsend, nieces and nephews, and her Zeta sisters. Visitation Tuesday, September 29, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Washburn-McReavy, Nokomis Park Chapel, 1838 E. Minnehaha Parkway (at Cedar), Minneapolis. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joan of Arc Church at 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 30, 2015, 4537 3rd Ave S., Minneapolis, with visitation one hour before mass. Burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Belle Plaine. Memorials may be made to the "D.C. Townsend Scholarship" that is awarded to a Belle Plaine High School graduate each year with an interest in studying journalism, or to donor's choice.
