Lin, Sping passed away peacefully at his home in North Oaks, MN on May 21, 2019. Born September 1918 in Guangdong Province, China, he matriculated at the College of Agriculture, Zhongshan University, in Guangzhou in 1936. He graduated with a degree in entomology in 1940, and, in 1946, won a fellowship offered by the U.S. State Department to come to the U.S. for further study. He arrived at the University of Minnesota in March 1947. In July 1946, before his departure from China, he married Ying-Ngoh Deng, a fellow student whom he met during the war years. She joined him in Minnesota in 1948, and they remained a devoted couple until her passing in 2011. After receiving his Ph.D. in 1953, Sping continued at the U of M, eventually joining the faculty of the Department of Neurology, where he contributed to research on brain chemistry until his retirement in 1986. His commitment to science, education, and the Chinese - American community remained strong throughout his remaining years. He is survived by a son, James Lin, of Albuquerque, NM; a daughter, Judy Lin, and her husband, David Moore, of Houston, TX; and a grandson, Alexander Lin-Moore, of New Haven, CT. A memorial service will be held at 10 am on Saturday, June 15, 2019, at the Memorial Chapel at Lakewood Cemetery in Mpls, MN.
