Carey, John W. (81) passed away peacefully at home on December 11, 2018. His wife Janet, of 53 years, was by his side. He had two loves in his life: his family and the law. John is survived by wife Janet, children Donovan (Connie), Ryan (Tami), and Shannon (Collin), and grandchildren. John loved playing cards, finding the perfect gift (which he rarely mastered), injecting laughter into our lives at every turn, and spoiling his dog. John had the privilege of being a trial lawyer for 48+ years and to his delight never retired from the practice. For those who knew him, John was bigger than life he lit up every room he entered, his sense of humor was second to none, his compassion was all encompassing, and his love of big jewelry and motorcycles (think Boss Hoss with a corvette engine) never ceased. He was also known for his funny story telling. John loved the colleagues he worked with throughout his career and was blessed to call many of them dear friends, even those who were "adversaries". He was very proud of the work he did as a trial lawyer and cared deeply about each and every client. There will be two celebrations honoring John. A celebration in the legal community will be held at a future date to be communicated. A celebration/open house will be hosted by his children Saturday, December 15, 2018 from 1-5 PM at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 5401 Green Valley Drive, Bloomington, MN. A private funeral will be held at a later date. We will miss him every day and we are grateful for the time we had with the man who made us laugh each and every day. The family requests no flowers. If you feel inclined, memorials to an organization of your choosing, or the Southern Poverty Law Center. In memory of John, when the opportunity presents itself, lend a hand to someone in need.
