Newswanger, Jean Audrey (nee Phillips) was born on September 17, 1927 in Brooklyn, New York to Elsie Viola Rose and Ray Vivian Phillips. Graduating High School in 1943, she worked at a U.S. Naval air base until the end of the war. In 1947, Jean married Donald Wayne New-swanger of Los Angeles. Jean worked as a teacher, secretary, and preschool director. She worked as secretary to the Mayor of Los Angeles and later as a secretary for a private investigator. She received a Master's degree in early childhood education from California State University at Dominguez Hills. Her interests included amateur radio, music, literature, and travel. Jean and Don retired and moved to Indianapolis in 1981. In late 2004, they moved to Minnesota to live at Presbyterian Homes in Spring Park. Don passed away in 2006. Don and Jean lost their grandson, Russell Roy in 2004 and their daughter, Diana Castellano earlier this year. Their oldest daughter, Jan (John) Neuenschwander lives in Upton, California. Son, Craig (Sally), lives in Oakland California. Younger son, Rick (Meg) lives in Maple Plain, Minnesota. Jean is also survived by eight grandchildren: Michael Minkler, Chera Minkler, Sandra Ottensman, Leah Kallerud, Joana Howard, Eugene Castellano, Lizy Simonen, and Paul Newswanger, & by thirteen great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 13, at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Maple Plain, 558 County Rd 110, Maple Plain, MN 55359.
