Helland, Paul Andrew Samuel Age 80, of Mendota Heights, passed away Wednesday, August 29, 2018. Paul was born May 25, 1938 in Sioux Falls, SD to Paul and Viola (Steen) Helland. He received undergraduate degrees from Bethany Lutheran College and South Dakota State University, and a graduate degree from the University of Northern Iowa. He served as an aviator in the US Navy for 22 years (5 years active duty, 17 years reserves), retiring at the rank of Commander. He was a professor and later Dean of Academics at Bethany Lutheran College from 1965 to 1985. He and his wife, Judy, then opened and operated a travel business, International Cruise and Tour, from 1985 to 2013. Paul had a quick wit and dry sense of humor that delighted his family and friends. He and Judy enjoyed traveling the world, frequently with family and friends, visiting countries on six continents. Paul was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Elisabeth Olsen. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Judy; children, Thomas (Jo Ann), Rebecca (John Gilliver), and Steven (Shannon); four grandsons, Jason, Michael, Andrew, and Samuel; his brother, Philip; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 6, 2018, at St. James Lutheran Church, 460 Annapolis St. W., West St. Paul, MN at 10:30 a.m., with visitation one hour prior, and followed by burial at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
