Stitt, Peter Allison Age 77. A 1958 graduate of Washburn High School. He was born to Allison and Josephine (Eichham-mer) Stitt on October 9, 1940 in Minneapolis. He died on May 24, 2018 at his son Jon's home in Dallas where he spent the last four months of life after undergoing chemotherapy and radiation in Gettysburg, PA, to treat a glioblastoma brain tumor. In Texas he was comfortable under the care of Jon and his wife Vicki. He enjoyed visits from family members and heartfelt correspondence from classmates, students, colleagues and writers. Peter was well-educated and had an illustrious career in literature. He earned a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Minnesota and a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he edited the Carolina Quarterly literary journal. He was a professor at Middlebury College and the University of Houston before moving to Gettysburg College in 1986 as the founding editor of the award-winning Gettysburg Review, until his retirement in 2016. In his spare time he enjoyed tennis, casino black jack, tar heel basketball, and of course reading and writing. In recent years, he looked forward to "wintering" in Ocean Springs, MS. He is survived by his first wife Judith Stitt of Edina and their two sons Peter Allison Stitt II of Fort Collins, CO, and Jon Andrew Stitt of Dallas; six grandchildren, Shelby and Rebecca of Anchorage, AK, Jacob & Sam of Fort Collins, Allison of Shelby, NC, and Tristan of Dallas; his second wife, Jean Straub of Gettysburg and her son, Justin Redd of Portland, OR; and his third wife, Sheila Mulligan of Gettysburg and her three daughters. A memorial service was held at the Gettysburg College Chapel.
