Freeman, Jane C. aged 96, died on March 23, 2018. Jane Charlotte Shields was born in Winston- Salem, North Carolina, on May 25, 1921. She graduated from Marshall High School, Minneapolis, at the age of 15, and at 19 earned a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from the University of Minnesota. It was there she met her husband, Orville L. Freeman, who was Minnesota's governor from 1955-1961 and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture from 1961-1969. Jane and Orville were married in 1942 and had two children, Constance Jane and Michael Orville, who has served as the Hennepin County Attorney for 18 years. Mrs. Freeman devoted her life to politics and public service, notably the United Nations, UNICEF and the Girl Scouts of the USA, serving as national president from 1978-1984. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband in 2003. She is survived by daughter, Connie; son Mike (Kate); grandchildren Katie, Beth, Matt, Tess and Jack, and great-grandchildren Isaac and Claire Moncrief.
