Sr. Ann Redmond

Redmond, Sr. Ann "A fierce, yet gentle advocate for justice, a passionate proponent for the education of women, a mentor and champion for human rights" are but a few of the many qualities those who knew her best, described Sister Ann Redmond, CSJ. Born in Grand Forks, North Dakota on March 27, 1933, Ann died peacefully on Friday evening, March 9, 2018 at United Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota. Ann earned her B.A. in English and Education from the then College of St. Catherine in 1962. She went on to earn an M. A. and Ph.D. in the same fields, from the University of Minnesota. Between 1956 and 1971 Ann taught and later served as principal in Catholic elementary schools around the Twin Cities. In the 1970's Ann's pioneering and creative teaching efforts, especially in the area of writing, were felt on both the national and local level through presentations and workshops at the National Catholic Education Association and as the St. Paul and Minneapolis Archdiocesan Elementary Curriculum Coordinator. In 1978 Ann joined St. Catherine's Department of English, and in her 31 years of service as Professor, Associate Academic Dean, and Co-Director of the Center of Excellence for Women, Economic Justice and Public Policy, she taught and touched the lives of thousands of students, faculty and staff members, with her faithful witness, fearless leadership, creative writing methods, and great sense of humor. Upon retirement, Ann continued to be a driving force, ally, and advocate for the protection and advancement of all woman, heading the CSJ Anti-Human Trafficking working group, and in her partnership with Breaking Free. In fusing her great love of writing with her deep desire for justice, this quote by Tom Stoppard, was one of Ann's favorite. "Words are sacred. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones, in the right order, you can nudge the world a little." Preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Ann (Devine) Redmond; brothers Art Redmond, Pat (Eileen) Redmond and sister Mary (Victor Jr.) Pogatchnik; nephews Victor Pogatchnik III and Brian Redmond. Survived by nieces and nephews, Mike Redmond, James Redmond, Terri Redmond, Becki Redmond, Thomas Redmond, Sr., John Redmond, Susan Elton, Denise Pogatchnik, Donna Kreger, Cathy Rettig, and Bob Pogatchnik; sister-in-law Carol McInnes; and many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews, as well as her CSJ Community of sisters and friends. Mass of Christian Burial we be held at 5:00 p.m., Friday, March 16, at Our Lady of the Presentation Chapel, 1884 Randolph Avenue, St. Paul, MN, with Visitation beginning at 2 p.m., preceding Mass. Burial Services will take place on Saturday, March 17, beginning with Visitation in the Atrium of Our Lady of the Presentation Chapel at 9 a.m. All will leave in procession for Resurrection Cemetery at 10 a.m. Memorials preferred to Breaking Free, P.O.
