Hoag, Janet Johanna Chalgren Janet Johanna Chalgren Hoag, age 93, passed away on November 17, 2017 in Colorado Springs, CO, where she had resided for 40 years. Memorial Services will be held in Minneapolis on Monday, January 22, 2018, beginning at 10:30 AM at Salem- Covenant Church, and at Hillside Cemetery thereafter. Janet Johanna Chalgren was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on October 26, 1924, to Edward Arnold Chalgren and Anna Catherine Eckström Chalgren, and was raised there, in a community-minded immigrant Swedish-American urban home and childhood filled with music. Janet "Jan" Chalgren graduated from Edison High School in Minneapolis in 1942, and was a member of the Student Council, WIZARD, Forum, National Honor Society and Quill and Scroll. In 1949, Janet graduated from the University of Minnesota, earning a Bachelor of Science in Education, while also working at an early Minneapolis television station. Post-World War II California drew Janet to immediately begin her dedicated teaching career and her new life - in the sunny beach towns of Southern California running into many Midwesterners! Janet "Jan" Chalgren and John "JB" Bannatyne Hoag III (South High School, Minneapolis, Minnesota) met in Southern California and were married in 1951 in Santa Barbara, CA. They moved shortly thereafter to Florida first to Pensacola (where they began their family) and then to Coral Gables - for a total of 10 years. The family moved again in 1961, to California, driving cross- country in a VW Camper Van - first to Hermosa Beach, and to Newport Beach a year later. The family resided in Newport Beach, CA, for 16 years, where, as an Elementary School Teacher, Janet was recognized as Teacher of The Year for the neighboring Huntington Beach School District. Janet was a loving wife and a caring parent to two children, John B. Hoag IV (and his wife Joanne Goldbaum - both of Colorado Springs) and Janet "Lisa" Leslie Hoag (Mieritz) (of Colorado Springs; now deceased). Janet was preceded in death by her parents, by her husband JB Hoag (deceased 1988), by her three siblings: Edward Gustaf Arnold Chal- gren, Jr., Eleanor Anna Chalgren Lutz and Ione Ruth Chalgren Martin (formerly of Colorado Springs), by her Mother-In-Law Marion Rhoads Sullivan, Sister-In-Law Joanne Hoag Brennan and Brother-In-Law John "Jack" Brennan. Janet's Son-In-Law Patrick William Mieritz lives in Colorado Springs, and her Grandson Daniel Gustave Mieritz recently moved from there to Loveland, CO. Janet's two Granddaughters, Marina Kato Hoag, and Emily Anna Mieritz Heyne, with her husband James Heyne, live out-of- state. Family and friends will remember Janet for her admirable determination, work ethic, enthusiasm, professionalism, clever mind, friendly manner, sparkling eyes, wry humor and ready smile. Janet lived a remarkable and productive 93 years of diligence, achievement and satisfaction in both her family and her professional worlds. A private memorial reception was held in Colorado Springs on December 3, 2017. Now, for Janet's Childhood and Family Hometown of Minneapolis, Minnesota, a final Memorial and Service will occur midday on January 22, 2018, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Please contact Salem-Covenant Church (see information below) for further details regarding The Memorial Service (Salem-Covenant Church) or The Graveside Service (Hillside Cemetery) that follows. The family expresses the desire for a fresh and fragrance-free Memorial including a lowered eco-footprint, and thus prefers that no flowers are sent. Janet has supported religious, educational, civic and environmental causes throughout her entire life. And, for Minneapolis, Janet fondly remembered the role of Salem-Covenant Church in her youth and family history.
