Gusset plate flaw seen as early as 2003
Two crucial gusset plate connections on the Interstate 35W bridge were visibly deformed at least four years before the structure collapsed. The gusset plates depicted in this June 2003 photo show how steel plates located in the bridge’s U-10 connections were deformed. Federal investigators believe they were among the first points of failure in the I-35W collapse.
