Millions of fish and tens of thousands of migrating loons, ducks and other birds have died of botulism poisoning in the Great Lakes since 1999. The animals became paralyzed after eating quagga mussels or round goby fish, two species introduced from Europe. The invaders apparently accumulate the toxic bacteria from the bottom of the lakes, and pass it on to native species.
