In addition to three hybrid buses Metro Transit has had in its fleet since 2002, 19 more will be put into service on Monday and 150 more has been ordered from the Gillig Corp. and will be delivered over the next five years. These environment friendly, fuel saving vehicles use a process called regenerative braking to capture inertial energy, store it and then reuse it. Forty percent of the energy to accelerate the bus comes from energy saved in this process, energy that otherwise would be wasted through heat in the brake pads.
