Prairie potholes disappear

Before Minnesota was settled by whites, vast prairies contained millions of small wetlands called potholes. Most have been drained to grow crops, but the remaining potholes provide critical habitat for 200 migratory bird species. They also produce a major share of the nation’s ducks each year.
