Heisman Trophy watch

The front-runner

Leonard Fournette, RB, LSU: Played later Saturday at No. 7 Alabama. Season: 1,352 yards and 15 TDs.

In the hunt

Trevone Boykin, QB, TCU: His hopes took a big hit when he threw four picks in a loss at No. 12 Oklahoma State. He did pass for 445 yards and a TD and rushed for two TDs. Season: 233-for-349, 3,372 yards and 29 TDs.

Ezekiel Elliott, RB, Ohio State: Played later Saturday vs. the Gophers. Season: 1,130 yards and 13 TDs.

Christian McCaffrey, RB, Stanford: Rushed for 147 yards and threw a TD pass at Colorado. Season: 1,207 rushing yards, 325 receiving yards, eight total TDs.

Corey Coleman, WR, Baylor: Caught 11 passes for 216 yards and two TDs at Kansas State on Thursday. Season: 58 receptions, 1,178 yards (a 20.3 average) and 20 TDs.

This week's best bets

No. 2 Baylor at No. 14 Oklahoma: The Bears announced themselves as serious national title threats last year by walloping the Sooners 48-14 in Waco. For the Sooners, winning here is crucial, as No. 5 TCU and No. 12 Oklahoma State still await.

No. 7 Alabama at No. 24 Mississippi State: The Crimson Tide got a lot of love from the College Football Playoff selection committee in its first rankings. And it'll get more this week. But a trip to Starkville isn't the gimme it used to be.

No. 15 Memphis at No. 18 Houston: An American Athletic Conference team — even an undefeated one — earning a spot in the playoff is a long shot at best, but the conference will put a team in a selection committee bowl. The Cougars have the inside track, now that Memphis lost to Navy.

Oregon at No. 9 Stanford: The Cardinal can clinch the Pac-12 North title with a victory over the Ducks.
