COLUMBIA, S.C. - About half of Southern Democrats responding to a poll say they were opposed or outraged by South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson's shout of "You lie!" when President Barack Obama addressed Congress.
The State of Columbia newspaper reported that the Winthrop University poll showed that among Democrats, more than 48 percent said they were opposed to Wilson and outraged by the Republican's remark.
Far fewer Southern Republicans, just over 11 percent, said they were outraged. But another 36 percent of Southern Republicans said they opposed Wilson's outburst.
The poll also found more than 43 percent of Southern Republicans liked it when Wilson berated Obama.
The telephone survey of 866 people Oct. 24-Nov. 7 reported a margin of error of 3.3 percentage points.
