Former suspect in California gang rape case says he tried to help 16-year-old victim

RICHMOND, Calif. - A man who was arrested but later released in connection with the rape of a 16-year-old girl outside a high school homecoming dance in California says he didn't take part in the attack, but was trying to help the girl.

Salvador Rodriguez of Richmond told KGO-TV that he was skateboarding when he saw the girl being attacked in a courtyard near the school.

Rodriguez says he saw several people kick the girl and tear her clothes during the Oct. 24 attack.

The 21-year-old Rodriguez told the station that he didn't call the police because he feared for his safety. He says he tried to help the injured girl by covering her half-naked body with his T-shirt.

Six others are facing rape and other charges in the assault outside Richmond High School. Investigators believe as many as 10 people participated.
