Attorney General: Eric Holder, former deputy attorney general; spent most of his career as a federal prosecutor. Born Jan. 21, 1951, in New York City. Graduated from Columbia University and Columbia Law School. Married with three children.

Agriculture: Tom Vilsack, former Iowa governor; made a brief presidential run against Obama. Born Dec. 13, 1950, in Pittsburgh. Law degree in 1975 from Albany Law School. Married with two sons.

Commerce: Open. Bill Richardson withdrew his name.

Defense: Robert Gates. It will be the first time a Pentagon chief has been carried over from a president of a different party. Born Sept. 25, 1943, in Wichita, Kan. Undergraduate from the College of William and Mary, master's from Indiana University and a Ph.D. from Georgetown University.

Education: Arne Duncan, chief executive officer of Chicago public schools. Born Nov. 6, 1964. Graduated from Harvard and sits on the Harvard Board of Overseers.

Energy: Steven Chu, Nobel Prize-winning physicist. Born Feb. 28, 1948, in St. Louis. Math and physics degrees from the University of Rochester, and a Ph. D. in physics from California, Berkeley. Married. Two sons from previous marriage.

Health and Human Services: Tom Daschle, former senator from South Dakota. Born Dec. 9, 1947, in Aberdeen, S.D. Married. Three children from previous marriage.

Homeland Security: Janet Napolitano, Arizona governor and former U.S. attorney. Born Nov. 29, 1957, in New York City but reared in Albuquerque. Graduate of Santa Clara University in California. Law degree from the University of Virginia.

Housing and Urban Development: Shaun Donovan; headed New York City's Department of Housing Preservation and Development and worked as an architect in New York and Italy. Born Jan. 24, 1966, in New York. Undergraduate and graduate degrees from Harvard. Married with two sons.

Labor: Hilda Solis, member of U.S. House. Has close ties with organized labor. Born Oct. 20, 1957, in Los Angeles. Undergraduate from California State Polytechnic University and master's from University of Southern California. Married.

Interior: Ken Salazar, Colorado senator with decades' worth of practice in water and environmental law in the private sector. Born March 2, 1955, in Alamosa, Colo. Bachelor's from Colorado College and a law degree from the University of Michigan. Married with two daughters.

State: Hillary Rodham Clinton, New York senator, former First Lady and former Obama rival. Born on Oct. 26, 1947, in Chicago. Undergraduate from Wellesley, law degree from Yale University. Married with one daughter.

Transportation: Ray LaHood, a Republican, former U.S. House member and former teacher. Born Dec. 6, 1945, in Peoria, Ill. Graduated from Bradley University in Peoria.

Treasury: Timothy Geithner, president of Federal Reserve Bank of New York whose nomination has become embroiled over his tax mistakes. Born Aug. 18, 1961, in New York. Undergraduate from Dartmouth College and master's from Johns Hopkins. Married with two children.

Veterans Affairs: Retired Gen. Eric Shinseki, 38-year career in the Army. Born Nov. 28, 1942, in Lihue, Hawaii. West Point graduate, master's from Duke University. Married with two adult children.

Cabinet-level posts: U.N. Abassador: Susan E. Rice. In line to become third U.S. ambassador to U.N., after Madeleine Albright and Jeane Kirkpatrick.• EPA administrator: Lisa P. Jackson • Office of Management and Budget: Peter Orszag. U.S. trade representative: Ron Kirk.
