Illegal immigrants to be allowed licenses
California joined the growing list of states that allow immigrants who are in the United States illegally to obtain driver’s licenses — a measure supported by police chiefs and insurance authorities. Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown signed the bill in front of a cheering crowd of immigrants and their supporters, predicting other parts of the country will follow the example set by the nation’s most populous state. The licenses, expected to become available no later than January 2015, will carry a special designation.
Warnings issued ahead of storm
From a tiny, vulnerable island off Louisiana to the beaches of the Florida Panhandle, Gulf Coast residents prepared for a possible hit from Tropical Storm Karen, which threatened to become the first named tropical system to menace the United States this year. Karen was forecast to lash the northern Gulf Coast over the weekend as a weak hurricane or tropical storm. In Louisiana, Gov. Bobby Jindal declared a state of emergency and Florida Gov. Rick Scott declared an emergency for 18 counties.
Russia evacuates its embassy after attack
Russia removed its diplomatic community from Libya after an attack on its embassy in Tripoli and said it was relocating its mission to Tunisia until conditions were safe. The Foreign Ministry said it took the step a day after it expelled armed men who had stormed the complex, apparently seeking revenge for the killing of a Libyan air force officer.
Dress code change prompts naked protest
Students and a professor at the University of Kaposvar’s arts school in Hungary took off their clothes in class to protest the new dress code introduced by the institution’s president. The protest was prompted by a ban on dresses showing too much cleavage, miniskirts, excessive makeup and flip-flops.
