Deputy president goes on trial at Hague
Kenya’s deputy president pleaded not guilty to charges of crimes against humanity before the International Criminal Court at The Hague for his role in the violence that rocked the country after the disputed 2007 election. The deputy president, William Ruto, went on trial before the court with his co-defendant, Joshua arap Sang, an influential radio executive. The election set off ethnic clashes across the nation that claimed the lives of more than 1,100 people and displaced 600,000.
More troops deployed amid rebel standoff
President Benigno Aquino deployed more troops to the southern city of Zamboanga as a standoff with Muslim rebels there complicated efforts to make progress in peace talks with another separatist group. Suspected members of the Moro National Liberation Front were holed up in a Muslim residential community of about 180 people, forcing the military to keep a “healthy distance,” local Government Secretary Mar Roxas said.
Dictator’s children to pay $154 million
The children of a former military dictator of South Korea, Chun Doo-hwan, said they would pay $154 million that their father owed the government in fines. Their decision closes a chapter on South Korea’s prolonged struggle with the legacy of one of its most brutal former leaders. Chun came to power in a coup in 1979 after the assassination of another military-backed strongman, President Park Chung-hee, the father of President Park Geun-hye. Chun was later convicted of treason and collecting huge bribes.
Court upbraided NSA over phone data
Intelligence officials released secret documents showing that a judge reprimanded the NSA in 2009 for violating its own procedures and misleading the nation’s intelligence court about how it used the telephone call logs it gathers in the hunt for terrorists. It was the second case of a severe scolding of the agency by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to come to light since the disclosure of documents by Edward Snowden began this summer.
