Netanyahu names defense minister

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appointed as defense minister the former military chief Moshe Ya’alon, a hard-liner on the Palestinian peace process. Netanyahu gave Cabinet posts to Likud Party colleagues, a day after informing President Shimon Peres that he had succeeded in forming a coalition after six weeks of talks. The new coalition is expected to be sworn in Monday.

Turkey

Man detained in death of New York tourist

A 46-year-old homeless man suspected in the killing of a New York City woman found dead in Istanbul last month was taken into custody near the Turkish-Syrian border, Turkish authorities said. Sarai Sierra, 33, had been touring alone in Turkey in January when she disappeared. Her body was discovered on Feb. 2 near the walls of the Old City.
