Inmate says he's too obese for execution

A condemned Ohio inmate who weighs at least 480 pounds wants his upcoming execution delayed, saying his weight could lead to a "torturous and lingering death." Ronald Post, who shot and killed a hotel clerk in northern Ohio almost 30 years ago, said his weight, vein access, scar tissue and other medical problems raise the likelihood his executioners would encounter severe problems.

FLORIDA

Shuttle Endeavour stuck at home

Space shuttle Endeavour was supposed to depart the Kennedy Space Center on Monday for its museum home in Los Angeles. But stormy weather along the Gulf of Mexico nixed the travel plans until Wednesday morning. Endeavour will go on display at the California Science Center.

PENNSYLVANIA

Jerry Sandusky to be sentenced Oct. 9

Jerry Sandusky, the former Penn State assistant football coach convicted of child sex abuse, will be sentenced Oct. 9, the judge in the case has ordered. Sandusky, 68, faces hundreds of years in prison after he was convicted of 45 counts of abusing 10 boys over the course of 15 years. The former coach, who has been in jail since the June verdict, has maintained his innocence.

NORTH CAROLINA

Ex-Green Beret's case back in court

Jeffrey MacDonald, the Princeton-educated doctor convicted of murdering his family 42 years ago, attended the opening of a court hearing in Wilmington in which he is hoping new claims about DNA evidence and witnesses' testimony will help prove his innocence. The hearing could last as long as two weeks.

Jets hit Lebanese territory near border

Missiles fired by Syrian warplanes hit Lebanese territory in one of the most serious cross-border violations since Syria's crisis began 18 months ago, security officials in Beirut and Lebanese state media said. The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said four missiles fired by two Syrian jets hit a rugged and remote area on the edge of the Lebanese border town of Arsal. The Syrian forces were believed to be chasing rebels in the area, which has been the site of clashes between opposition fighters battling Syrian troops just on the other side of the frontier. Lebanese armed forces have detained people in the region for trying to smuggle weapons into Syria from Lebanon. Arsal is a predominantly Sunni Muslim town, like the majority of Syria's opposition that is trying to oust President Bashar Assad from power.
