Wildfire evacuees allowed to return

Unpredictable winds and high temperatures were challenging crews in their battle against a Utah wildfire that forced more than 2,300 people to flee their homes. The evacuees were allowed to return to their homes Saturday evening after officials determined the blaze no longer posed a threat to them. Winds pushed some of the fire back on itself, and crews managed to put out hot spots closest to homes.

Former IRA leader to meet with the queen

In one of the most anticipated gestures in recent Irish history, a former commander of the Irish Republican Army will shake hands this week in Belfast with Queen Elizabeth. The former commander, Martin McGuinness, was long considered one of Britain's greatest enemies. Sinn Fein, the political arm before the IRA disbanded, said its executive committee decided to allow him to attend a charity event Wednesday, where the queen, Prince Philip and Irish President Michael D. Higgins will be guests. The historic handshake will take place in private with a single photographer disseminating pictures to the media. Sinn Fein declined a similar invitation during a royal visit to the Irish Republic last year.

At a news conference, Kudrin said that President Vladimir Putin should delay much of the increased social and military spending that he announced during his recent campaign for the presidency. Kudrin was ousted from the government last year after protesting rising military spending.
