BP charges at a glance

  • Updated: April 24, 2012 - 9:04 PM

The charges: Former BP engineer Kurt Mix of Katy, Texas, is accused of obstruction of justice for allegedly deleting more than 200 messages sent to a supervisor from his iPhone containing information about how much oil was spilling from the blown-out BP well in the Gulf of Mexico. He also is accused of later deleting 100 more messages to a contractor.

The content: Many of the messages had to do with an effort to plug up the well by injecting mud under pressure. On the first day of that "top kill" effort, one message said: "Too much flow rate -- over 15,000 [barrels of oil per day] and too large an orifice."

Other charges: The Justice Department said the investigation was continuing and suggested there might be more charges.
