LIHUE, Hawaii — A mother who saved one son from a strong ocean current off the island of Kauai died after after a failed attempt to save another son.

Thirty-two-year-old Jennifer White of Gunnison, Colo., brought her eight-year-old son to shore on Monday, then swam back into the water to attempt a rescue of her nine-year-old boy. White lost consciousness and suffered injuries during the effort.

A bystander rescued White, who was in critical condition until she died.

Authorities say scuba divers and other rescuers went looking for the nine-year-old.

They also are looking for a 17-year-old missing since Saturday in a separate incident.

A Coast Guard spokeswoman says waves were in the eight-foot range with winds blowing at about 20 miles per hour.
