U.S. student charged with spying, jailed

A U.S. student from Prince­ton University was arrested in Iran and has been sentenced to 10 years in prison on charges he was spying for the United States, an Iranian judiciary official said Sunday, an action bound to aggravate relations between the two countries. The arrest and sentencing of the American, Xiyue Wang, a graduate student in history, was announced months after he had vanished in Iran, where he was doing research for a doctoral thesis. The officials also announced that Hossein Ferei­doun, the brother of President Hassan Rouhani of Iran, had been arrested in a corruption inquiry in what was seen as a move by Rouhani's rivals to undermine and embarrass him.


One dead amid vote on president

Arson fire kills 22 in workers' dorm

At least 22 people died in a blaze that gutted a two-story workers' dormitory in eastern China, and investigators suspect the fire was the work of an arsonist who used gasoline, according to local news reports. The residents were mostly migrant workers in their 20s working as waitresses and cooks, the report said.


Teenager charged in spree of acid attacks

British police have charged a teenager with a spate of London acid attacks, as authorities considered whether tougher sentences would curb a spike in assaults with corrosive liquids. The Metropolitan Police force said that a 16-year-old boy faces 15 charges, including grievous bodily harm. The boy, who can't be named because of his age, was arrested after five moped riders were sprayed in a 90-minute period last week.


Park rangers dead in militia attack

Five Congo park rangers have been found dead and an American journalist has been found in good condition in the Okapi Wildlife Reserve after going missing during a militia attack, a local official said Sunday. Two British journalists and five other park rangers, part of the same team, escaped during the attack.


Suspect in deputy's shooting kills himself

A man suspected of shooting and wounding a Georgia deputy killed himself after an armed standoff with officers on Sunday, authorities reported. The deputy suffered leg wounds and was taken to a hospital, where he was expected to recover from noncritical injuries. The deputy was investigating a report of a domestic disturbance when he was shot.
