U.N. warns of genocide in civil war

South Sudan's festering civil war risks spiraling into genocide, according to the United Nations' special adviser on the prevention of genocide, who cited recent examples of ethnically targeted rape, civilians being killed with machetes and villages being burned to the ground. Adama Dieng warned of a "strong risk of violence escalating along ethnic lines with the potential for genocide," speaking at a news conference in Juba after visiting South Sudan for five days.


Chemical weapons found in Aleppo

The Russian military said that its officers found evidence of chemical weapons use by Syrian militants in Aleppo where government forces are trying to regain control of areas they lost to insurgents. Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said unexploded ordnance and fragments of munitions containing chlorine and white phosphorus were found.


Jurors in police shooting deadlocked

Jurors told a judge in Cincinnati that they can't reach a decision after three days of deliberations in the murder trial of a white police officer who fatally shot an unarmed black man during a traffic stop. The judge told them to keep deliberating. The jurors said they couldn't reach a decision on murder or voluntary manslaughter charges against now-fired officer Ray Tensing, who killed 43-year-old motorist Sam DuBose near the University of Cincinnati in July 2015.


Police videos show chaos at nightclub

Images recorded by police body cameras of police responding to the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando show the uncertainty police officers faced as they entered the nightclub, where gunman Omar Mateen had barricaded himself in a bathroom. About two dozen videos were released by the Orange County Sheriff's Department from the June 12 shooting that left 49 people and the shooter dead.


Police shoot man who stabbed 4 people

Police officers shot an armed man inside a mental health facility after he stabbed several people and put down his knife but refused to drop his gun while his victims were bleeding badly, authorities said. Seven people were taken to hospitals, including the man and at least four stabbing victims. It was unclear if any injuries were life-threatening.
