Final two escapees caught after a tip

A tip led San Francisco police to catch two escaped inmates, Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens said. Hossein Nayeri and Jonathan Tieu were captured. Authorities had been hunting for them and Bac Duong, who was arrested earlier, since they pulled off a brazen jail escape on Jan. 22.

Pentagon ends Petraeus case

Defense Secretary Ashton Carter decided not to impose further punishment on David Petraeus, the former CIA director and retired Army general who was forced to resign in a sex-and-secrets scandal in 2012. In a letter to congressional leaders, the Pentagon said that Carter agreed with an Army recommendation not to discipline Petraeus.

Liz Cheney, the older daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, is running for the state's sole seat in the House of Representatives. The seat will be vacated by Republican Rep. Cynthia Lummis.

37 migrants drown after boat capsizes

A boat carrying Syrians attempting the short sea journey from Turkey to Greece struck rocks and capsized Saturday, causing at least 37 people to drown, among them several babies and young children. More than 250 migrants have drowned this month trying to reach Greece.

Miners rescued after being trapped 36 days

Four miners emerged alive after 36 days trapped 720 feet underground in eastern China, following a huge rescue effort. The four men were among 29 miners caught when a gypsum mine in Pingyi County, Shandong Province, collapsed Dec. 25. Eleven were rescued soon after, and one was found dead.

Opposition group arrives for peace talks

The main Syrian opposition delegation arrived in Geneva, but it remained unclear whether they would actually participate in United Nations-sponsored peace talks aimed at ending Syria's civil war. The indirect peace talks began Friday but the main opposition group boycotted that session.

The tender saga of the goat and the tiger

A romance that enchanted Russia may be over: Timur the goat and Amur the tiger have had a fight and aren't together anymore. In November, the goat was placed in the tiger's compound in a wildlife park near Vladivostok with the expectation that the cat would eventually kill and eat him. But the two became friends. They are a popular topic on social media. But Timur started annoying the tiger, so they were temporarily separated.
