Tavares, Islanders pour it on

– New York Islanders center John Tavares scored a hat trick and added an assist to help propel his team to a 7-3 victory over the Dallas Stars on Monday night.

“A lot of people dream of those nights,” Islanders coach Jack Capuano said. “Anytime [Tavares] has a night like that, it’s nice to win the hockey game.”

Highly touted rookie center Ryan Strome scored the first goal of his NHL career.

With the Islanders on the power play early in the second period trailing 2-0, Strome put a wrist shot past Dallas goalie Kari Lehtonen — one of four Islanders goals in the frame.

• FLAMES CATCH A SPARK: The Calgary Flames, who had lost four in a row and had scored only one goal since Dec. 23, rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Colorado Avalanche in Denver. Mike Cammalleri scored the winner with 3:30 left.
