Here are rules surrounding the Minnesota wolf hunt:

• Wolves taken during deer season or the late wolf season (beginning Nov. 24) by hunting or trapping (late season only) must be registered and inspected by DNR wildlife officials.

• Registration can occur by phone, online or at big game registration stations and must be completed by 10 p.m. the day of the kill.

• Hunters with wolf permits are required to monitor the progress of the wolf harvest in the event a zone or other quota is reached and hunting and/or trapping are ended. Once the season starts, harvest progress will be available by phoning 1-888-706-6367 or online at www.startribune.com/a1848 and selecting the wolf season status tab at the bottom of the page.

• Wolf pelts and carcasses taken during deer season by hunters with wolf permits must be brought for inspection and collection of biological data to select DNR wildlife offices. Scheduled inspections are Nov. 6, Nov. 13 and Nov. 19, or by appointment. Carcasses must be inspected before a pelt is sold or removed from the state.

• A total of 614 of the 3,600 wolf hunting permits awarded for the deer season went unsold and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at noon Monday to unselected applicants. Others may purchase permits beginning Thursday. Purchasers must have a previous or current hunting license, and anyone born after Dec. 31, 1979, must hold a firearms safety certificate.
