Indiana took a slim first-day lead in the Big Ten women's swimming and diving meet on Wednesday at the University Aquatic Center. The Hoosiers had 74 points after two events, and the two-time defending champion Gophers had 72.

Indiana won the first event, the 200-yard medley relay, in 1 minute, 36.69 seconds. Wisconsin was second and Minnesota third in 1:37.14.

The Gophers won the 800 freestyle relay in 7:00.04 to set a school and pool record; the Hoosiers were second in 7:03.08. Swimmers for Minnesota were Tori Simenec, Lauren Votava, Jessica Plant and Kiera Janzen.

Dani Cameranesi, a Gophers freshman forward from Plymouth, was named the WCHA's rookie of the week. She scored the winning goal in Minnesota's 3-2 road victory over Wisconsin last Friday. The victory clinched a regular-season conference title for the Gophers. She had six shots and was a plus-3 in Minnesota's series sweep of the Badgers.

• Omaha forward Ryan Walters, a senior from Rosemount, was named one of 10 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award, based on achievements in the community, classroom, character and competition.

• Alaska Fairbanks redshirt junior Jared Larson, a transfer from the Gophers, has seven goals in the past seven games for the Nanooks, who are on a 6-1 roll.
