Heavyweight Michael Kroells' 12-6 decision over Pat Gillen of Virginia clinched a 19-15 victory for the Gophers wrestling team in its second dual meet of the season on Saturday at Williams Arena.

Chris Pfarr won 13-10 at 184 pounds and Brett, his brother, 7-4 at 197 to give the Gophers a 16-15 lead. They trailed 12-7 after five matches.

The Gophers opened their day in the four-team Gopher Duals with a 31-3 rout of Grand Canyon and closed it with a 20-13 win over South Dakota that also came down to the last match. The scored was tied 13-all before Brett Pfarr for a major decisions to give Minnesota a four-point lead and Kroells got another to clinch it.Tommy Thorn at 141 pounds and Dylan Urbach at 165, made their varsity debuts and got their first wins against Grand Canyon on major decisions.

U volleyball prevails

The No. 4-ranked Gophers volleyball team beat No. 25 Michigan 3-1 on Saturday at the Sports Pavilion.

The set scores were 25-23, 19-25, 26-24, 25-22. Minnesota improves to 21-3, 13-1 in the Big Ten.

Daly Santana led the Gophers with 23 kills and 15 digs while teammate Hannah Tapp had 11 kills.

Oles win soccer title

St. Olaf defeated St. Thomas 2-0 for the MIAC men's soccer tournament championship in Northfield. Aaron Stets scored in the 19th minute of the first half for the Oles, on a header from a cross by Aaron Miller.

Jens Undlin made it 2-0 in the 68th minute on an unassisted goal on a breakaway. Ben Braman made seven for St. Olaf (13-7-1) to get the shutout. Keeper Grant Larson had five saves for the Tommies (12-7-1).

The Oles were the fourth seed, the Tommies the sixth.

Gusties women on pitch

Visiting Gustavus Adolphus upset top-seeded St. Thomas 1-0 in the title game of the MIAC women's soccer tournament. Chaselyn Miller scored unassisted off a corner kick in the 58th minute for the Gusties (13-6-1) while keeper Ashley Becker made three saves. Tarynn Theilig had five stops for the Tommies (12-6-1).

Second-seeded Gustavus was only 2-13-3 overall last season, but earned its first MIAC playoff bid this year. The Tommies won the regular-season conference title and were 9-1-1 in their past 11 games.

… and in volleyball

A couple hours after Gustavus won the women's soccer title, the Gusties beat Bethel 25-20, 25-21, 20-25, 26-24 in volleyball in the MIAC title match in St. Peter.

Alyssa Taylor led the top-seeded Gusties (27-2) with 16 kills and teammate Taylor Trautman had 13. Tina Hoppe had 13 kills for the Royals (22-9).

U crushes UND in pool

The Gophers men's swimming and diving team won 13 of 16 events to beat North Dakota 193-103 in a dual meet in Grand Forks. Dylan Zoe won both diving events for the Gophers and Nick Orf both butterflies.

In the women's dual, the Gophers won one more event, 14, but the final score was identical to the men's. Katelyn Holmquist won both backstrokes and the 200 individual medley.
