The Gophers women's soccer team will open its season with a nonconference match against North Dakota State at 7 p.m. Friday at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
Minnesota, 11-9-1 overall and 7-5-1 in the Big Ten last season, was picked to finish sixth in the conference coaches' preseason poll.
The Gophers have seven freshmen on their roster, two of whom started in the team's 8-0 exhibition win over Drake last Saturday.
"We feel this class has the potential to positively impact our program quickly," Gophers coach Stefanie Golan. "We are adding depth in every position."
Minnesota, which will play Kansas at 2 p.m. Sunday at home, returns eight starters. Golan is starting her fourth season leading the team.
• Jim Lehman of Plymouth and Steve Whittaker of Becker, Minn., both shot 73s at the Chaska Town Course in a U.S. Senior Amateur sectional qualifier to advance. The national tournament will be held at Hidden Creek Golf Club in Egg Harbor Township, N.J. from Sept. 26-Oct. 1.
• Three women qualified for the U.S. Women's Senior Amateur in sectional qualifying at the Chaska Town Course. Leigh Klasse of Woodbury had the best round, a 6-over 78. Also advancing were Robin Webb of Clive, Iowa with an 82 and Lynn Anderson of Hopkins with an 83. The Women's Senior Amateur will be at Hillwood Country Club in Nashville from Sept. 26-Oct. 1.
• Six-time defending NSIC champion Augustana was named the conference favorite in the preseason men's cross-country coaches' poll. Sioux Falls was picked for second and Minnesota State Moorhead third. … The Vikings' women's cross-country team also was picked to repeat as conference champion. Minnesota Duluth and the University of Mary were the next two in the preseason coaches' poll.
• Danny Sinksen, a pro at Elmwood Golf Club in Sioux Falls, S.D., was named the men's golf coach at Augustana.
